Netbooks – Questions, trends and uses
Netbook? Notebook? What is the “right” name?
Here we go . . . mini notebook, subnotebook, UMPC (Ultra Mini Personal Computer), smartbook, cloudbook, super portable laptop, mini laptop and many more. We hear brand names like HP Mini, Lenovo Netbook, Sony mini-laptop, tablet PC’s, macmini.
How do you distinguish the Netbook from the notebook?
It’s getting more challenging to tell the difference. The Netbooks range from very small and basic and creep up to the size and performance of the notebook. Typically the Netbooks are considered to be smaller (9”-10” screen), lighter (2 ½ - 3 lbs.) and lower cost ($200-$400) than the notebook.
When did Netbooks emerge?
Around the mid 1990s. By 2007 the Netbooks proved to be a force to be reckoned with and many manufacturers jumped on board.
How many Netbook have been sold?
Estimated:
2007 - 400,000
2008 - 16.4 million
2009 - 33.3 million
2010 - 39.7 million
2013 - 139 million
What is Cloud computing?
Here’s the low tech description –
Cloud computing can be public or private use. It can be free or subscribed to. It is useful for students, government, business or the general public.
Here’s how it works. Cloud computing allows a student to access a school server and work on projects even without having the software on their personal netbook computer. It allows businesses to access private information without it being stored on their notebook. So the gist is that cloud computing allows users to obtain working access to information without the burden or expense of having the data or software loaded on each student or business persons netbook. It allows the user freedom to work from any location that has internet access.
